Project Taqwa: Take Time Out for You

By: Saadia Yunus, LMFT

Each and every one of us are running around in our daily lives trying to fulfill our responsibilities while maintaining some level of sanity so that we can continue doing what needs to be done the next day.  Through all of the hustle and bustle of life, with all of the deadlines and items on the to-do list, we can easily get lost in the shuffle. In all that you do in every day, when do you take time out for you?  To just sit and breathe and soak in the moment.

Too often, you are exhausted at the end of a long day and haven’t spent even one minute on your own self care.  Continuing to move forward like a machine, you keep pushing through sicknesses, traffic, and overdue assignments and are unable to take much needed time out for yourself.  This all has to change.  If it doesn’t, it will catch up to you so fast that you will wonder what happened. Self-care does not require a weekend away.  It is in life’s every day moments in which you choose to breath, close your eyes, and sit with what’s happening.  Breathe in deeply and slowly let the air out.  Breathe out the negativity, toxicity, judgment, criticism, all that has plagued your mind.  Grab a paper and pen and jot down your thoughts.  Close your eyes and visualize calmness, whether that is the roaring ocean, a gentle waterfall, or the quiet of the forest floor.

All it takes is a few moments to reflect on your internal self and release the negativity that you’ve been holding onto.  This will rejuvenate you and allow you to face all of the stress that each day brings with a new fervor and a positive outlook. What are you waiting for?  Start taking back your life today.  Ready, set, breathe.
